Waiting for Godot

“Waiting for Godot” is a play with vague background setting that opens up various scenic interpretation. Throughout the play the two main characters waits for Godot, desperately trying to get rid off boredom. With basic settings of the play, I’ve set up a scenic design based on my interpretation and analysis.

Above is a 3d model of scenic design staged in proscenium theater. The theater is expected to have about 150 seats. The stage has 2 floors, 1st floor as a conscious space within the patient, 2nd floor as a hospital, the real world the patient is lying.

Script Analysis

Costume Setting & Reference

All four characters (Estragon, Vladimir, Pozzo, Lucky) have lost their memory and judgment. Showed different aspects of human beings

The figures in the hospital upstairs are wearing white hospital clothes. The egos in the conscious world on the first floor are also in monotone outfits.

Scenic Drawing

Composed of two layers to make it look like sinking into the patient’s mind. Different levels are connected through ringer which works as a tree in the patient’s mind.

1st floor: Inside the patient’s consiousnesss (actor’s main stage)

2nd floor: In hospital bed with life support device

Initially, the hospital was on 1st floor and the conscious space was on 2nd floor. But in the final sketch and model at the top, I switched it up considering the audience’s viewport. 1st floor has bigger space and extrudes more toward audience. People tend to focus on the 1st floor that is more closer to them and I needed people to focus more on the main acting area, the conscious space.
